Hinewai Reserve

Hinewai stands as a remarkable ecological restoration endeavour nestled within the stunning landscape of Banks Peninsula. Privately owned and overseen by the Maurice White Native Forest Trust, it is a haven for conservation efforts, yet graciously open to the public for exploration on foot.

Spanning a vast expanse of 1250 hectares in the serene south-eastern corner of Banks Peninsula along the east coast of the South Island, Hinewai Reserve exudes natural beauty. Situated to the east of the charming town of Akaroa, it offers a tranquil escape into nature’s embrace.

The roots of this conservation project trace back to 1987 when the Maurice White Native Forest Trust acquired an initial parcel of 109 hectares. Since then, through strategic acquisitions including the purchase of Ōtānerito Station in 1991 and subsequent expansions, the trust has significantly augmented the reserve’s footprint. Additionally, since 2016, the trust has taken custodianship of the neighbouring 192-hectare Purple Peak Curry Reserve, following its acquisition by the New Zealand Native Forest Restoration Trust.

As visitors wander through Hinewai’s winding trails, they are enveloped by the beauty of native forests, babbling streams, and thriving wildlife. Beyond its ecological significance, the reserve serves as an educational platform, inspiring environmental stewardship and fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.

Hinewai epitomises the power of conservation initiatives fuelled by dedication, and community collaboration. It extends an open invitation to all to explore its wonders, encouraging a profound appreciation for the delicate balance of nature and the importance of its preservation for future generations.
