Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day is a time of national reflection and unity in Aotearoa New Zealand, and this year’s commemorations will hold special significance for Banks Peninsula. On Thursday, 6 February 2025, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will be attending the official Waitangi Day event at Ōnuku Marae in Akaroa, Te Waipounamu South Island.

The Prime Minister will be joined by a distinguished delegation, including Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, Members of Parliament, local government leaders, and members of the local community board. Whānau from across the motu will also gather to mark this important occasion.

A historic location for Waitangi Day

Ōnuku Marae holds deep historical and cultural significance for Ngāi Tahu. It was here, on 30 May 1840, that Te Tiriti o Waitangi was first signed within the Ngāi Tahu takiwā. The return of national leaders and local communities to this sacred place on Waitangi Day reinforces its importance in New Zealand’s history and ongoing commitment to Te Tiriti.
