Understanding Sea Level Rise: What It Means for Akaroa and the Bays

No matter where you stand on the issue of climate change, one thing is certain: Christchurch City Councilโ€™s planning decisions are guided by the 2021 Coastal Hazard Assessment, which models future sea level rise and coastal risks across the district, including Akaroa and the Bays.

These projections will shape how land use, infrastructure, and development are managed in the years ahead. For communities like ours, this means some planning decisions may be deferred until a full climate adaptation plan is developed specifically for Akaroa and surrounding bays.

To help residents understand what this means in practice, the CCC Planning Team will join the upcoming 2025 Akaroa Civic Trust AGM to present the latest sea level rise data, explain how it is being used, and answer your questions directly.
