A Key Marine Infrastructure Upgrade for Banks Peninsula

Drummonds Jetty has long been an important access point for locals and visitors alike. Boating, sightseeing, walking, jetty jumping, and swimming are popular activities in the area, making the upgrade essential for supporting the region’s recreational and commercial needs. The floating pontoon system enhances usability and ensures that vessels can dock more easily regardless of tidal changes.

The decision to upgrade the jetty follows findings from a 2013/14 user survey conducted by the Christchurch City Council. The survey revealed that while the majority of users came from Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, a significant number of visitors also travelled from other parts of Canterbury and overseas. Drummonds Jetty in Akaroa was particularly popular among international visitors, while the Duvauchelle slipway attracted residents from other parts of the region.

Strategic Importance for Local and Regional Marine Access

The importance of maintaining and upgrading marine infrastructure in Banks Peninsula has been well documented. The Christchurch City Council’s 2015 report, Harbours and Marine Structures Activity Management Plan: Long Term Plan 2015–2025, highlighted the essential role of marine structures in supporting local communities, tourism, and marine-based industries. The Drummonds Jetty upgrade aligns with these long-term plans, ensuring the structure remains safe, functional, and accessible for years to come.

The new floating pontoon is expected to provide long-term benefits, including:

  • Improved accessibility – allowing boats to dock regardless of tidal levels.
  • Enhanced marine conservation efforts – minimising environmental impact through sustainable construction techniques.
  • Economic opportunities – supporting local tourism and commercial operations.

Looking Ahead

The completion of the upgrade marks a significant milestone for Banks Peninsula’s marine infrastructure. With its improved design and enhanced usability, Drummonds Jetty will continue to be a cherished destination for both locals and visitors.

Whether you’re a boating enthusiast, a keen swimmer, or simply looking to enjoy the stunning views of Akaroa Harbour, the newly upgraded Drummonds Jetty is ready to welcome you.
