A vital opportunity for the Banks Peninsula community

This is a vital opportunity for the Banks Peninsula community to contribute to national legislation that directly affects our local resilience and wellbeing.

Recent extreme weather events have once again exposed a critical vulnerability in Banks Peninsula – our roading infrastructure. Increasingly frequent storms and intense rainfall are highlighting just how quickly our communities can be cut off.

Our unique geography and geographic isolation make us especially vulnerable. Without alternative routes or robust contingency planning, the consequences of such events can be severe – something we know all too well from repeated disruptions over recent years.

The proposed Bill outlines changes that will impact the roles and responsibilities of councils, emergency services, iwi, community organisations, and individuals. It is essential that our community’s specific needs and risks – including our rural setting, infrastructure limitations, and strong volunteer networks – are represented in the national conversation.
