Akaroa’s wastewater treatment plant, built in the 1960s, is located at Takapūneke, a significant historical site; the site of a massacre and cemetery.
The job of undoing this cultural insult passed to the Christchurch City Council in 2006, when it amalgamated with the Banks Peninsula District Council.
