Akaroa war memorial centenary

The Akaroa War Memorial celebrated its 100th anniversary on March 10, 2024, at 2 PM.

This important event honoured the lasting memory of the memorial, which stands as a symbol of remembrance and respect for those who served in the war.

The memorial unveiled in 1923, is located in the centre of town and consists of a reserved area with seating surrounding a tall structure made of stone. Inside, there are names of people who served in the war engraved on stone tablets.

In 2010, the memorial was damaged by an earthquake, but it was rebuilt with the help of local fundraisers and volunteers, with improvements made to strengthen it and add new features according to the original plans from the 1920s. The celebration marked the resilience and honour of those who served in the war.
