Little River Volunteer Fire Brigade
Little River Volunteer Fire Brigade – Locals Protecting Local
The Little River Volunteer Fire Brigade is made up of local people who give their time to help keep the community safe. The station is at 44 Western Valley Road and is part of Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
The brigade is always ready to respond to emergencies — day or night — across Little River and the wider Banks Peninsula area.
What They Do
The Little River firefighters help with:
-
Fires in homes, farms, and buildings
-
Car crashes and road accidents
-
Medical emergencies
-
Search and rescue work
-
Storms, floods, and other civil defence events
They also visit schools and community groups to share fire safety advice, teaching people how to stay safe and prevent fires.
The People Behind It
Everyone at the Little River station is a volunteer. They train regularly and are on call whenever emergencies happen. Many local employers support the brigade by letting volunteers leave work when the siren sounds.
Local businesses that support the team include Banks Peninsula Automotive, Squire Landscaping Ltd, Higgins, and YMCA of Christchurch, among others. Their help makes it easier for volunteers to do their important work.
How You Can Get Involved
The brigade always welcomes new members. If you’re interested in joining, you can visit the station or contact them through the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website. You can also come along on a training night to see what the team does.
Even if you don’t want to be a firefighter, there are other ways to help — by spreading fire safety messages, supporting local events, or simply thanking the volunteers for their service.
Why It Matters
Little River is a small rural community, and having a local fire brigade nearby makes a big difference. When there’s a fire, accident, or storm, help is only minutes away instead of hours.
The volunteers are your neighbours, friends, and family members — people who care deeply about keeping everyone safe. Their commitment shows the true spirit of community
