The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade | Always Ready to Help
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade is at the heart of the Lyttelton community. The station sits on London Street, and its team of volunteers are ready day and night to respond to fires, car accidents, medical callouts, and other emergencies around the harbour and hills.
A Long Local History
Lyttelton has had firefighters for nearly 150 years. After a big fire in 1870 destroyed much of the town, locals decided they needed their own brigade. The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade officially started in 1873, and the first fire station was built in 1902. It even had the town library upstairs!
As fire engines got bigger and the town grew, the brigade moved to its current station on London Street in 1967. The building you see today is home to a team that continues a proud local tradition of helping others.
What the Brigade Does
The Lyttelton firefighters don’t just put out fires. They also:
-
Respond to medical emergencies
-
Help at car crashes
-
Take part in search and rescue operations
-
Support civil defence during storms or earthquakes
Their work covers a wide area — from the busy port and town centre to the steep hills and rural roads around the harbour.
Volunteers Who Care
Everyone in the Lyttelton brigade is a volunteer. That means they give up their own time — often after work or during weekends — to train, respond to calls, and keep the community safe.
Across New Zealand, thousands of volunteer firefighters make up most of Fire and Emergency NZ’s crews. Without them, many smaller towns like Lyttelton wouldn’t have quick local help in an emergency.
Challenges and Community Support
It’s not always easy to run a volunteer fire brigade. Finding new members, keeping up with training, and maintaining equipment all take time and support. But Lyttelton’s firefighters keep going because they care deeply about their community.
You can help by:
-
Learning about fire safety and being prepared at home
-
Supporting local fundraising or community events
-
Saying thank you to the volunteers who give their time
-
Thinking about joining — new members are always welcome
Why It Matters
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade is more than a fire station — it’s a symbol of community spirit. These volunteers represent courage, teamwork, and care for others.
Whenever the siren sounds, they’re ready to drop what they’re doing and help. That’s what makes them such an important part of Lyttelton life.
