Banks Peninsula Volunteer Fire Brigade

Banks Peninsula Volunteer Fire Brigade – Locals Helping Locals

The Banks Peninsula Volunteer Fire Brigade is made up of people from small communities all around the peninsula. They volunteer their time to keep everyone safe and respond to emergencies across the area.

The brigade includes several local stations in Le Bons Bay, Wainui, Okains Bay, Little Akaloa, and Pigeon Bay. Together, they cover a wide and often remote part of Banks Peninsula — from the hills and forests to farms and coastal villages.

What They Do

The volunteers respond to all kinds of emergencies, including:

  • House and bush fires

  • Car crashes

  • Medical emergencies

  • Search and rescue

  • Floods, storms, and other natural events

They also visit local communities to share fire safety advice and help people learn how to stay safe.

The Volunteers

Everyone in the Banks Peninsula Fire Brigade is a volunteer. They live locally and know the area well. When the siren sounds, they stop what they’re doing — whether they’re at work, on the farm, or at home — and head straight to the station.

The team trains regularly so they’re ready for any emergency. They even take part in courses with the Red Cross to learn more about medical response.

Why It Matters

Banks Peninsula is a beautiful but remote place. The winding roads and long distances mean help can take time to arrive from the city. That’s why local fire brigades are so important.

When something goes wrong — like a fire or an accident — these local volunteers are often the first to arrive. They know the land, the roads, and the people. Their quick action helps protect lives, homes, and the environment.

How You Can Help

If you live on Banks Peninsula, you can support your local brigade by:

  • Becoming a volunteer

  • Learning about fire safety

  • Supporting local fundraisers and events

  • Thanking the volunteers for their service

Every bit of support helps keep the community safer and stronger.
