The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade | Locals Helping Locals

The Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade is made up of local people who volunteer their time to keep Akaroa and the Bays safe. They are on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

When the siren sounds, these volunteers drop what they’re doing — at home, work, or out in town — and head straight to the fire station on Beach Road.

What They Do

The Akaroa brigade helps with all kinds of emergencies, including:

  • Fires

  • Car accidents

  • Medical callouts

  • Storm and rescue work

They work closely with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and they are trained to respond quickly and safely wherever help is needed.

The Station and Equipment

The Akaroa Fire Station was built in 1982. It’s well equipped for the different types of emergencies the team faces. The brigade has three main trucks:

  • A pump truck that carries water and hoses

  • A rescue truck with tools for crashes and rescues

  • A tanker that brings extra water for rural fires

The People Behind It

Everyone in the brigade is a volunteer. They train regularly and give up their own time to help others. Many local employers support their staff to leave work when there’s an emergency.

The teamwork between the volunteers and the wider community is what makes Akaroa’s brigade strong.

Why It Matters

Akaroa is a busy harbour town with winding roads, hills, and a lot of visitors — which means emergencies can happen anywhere and anytime. Having a local fire brigade nearby makes a huge difference.

These volunteers are neighbours helping neighbours. Their quick response can save lives, homes, and the environment.

How You Can Support

You can help the brigade by:

  • Learning about fire safety at home

  • Moving aside for fire trucks on the road

  • Supporting local fundraisers or community events

  • Thinking about becoming a volunteer yourself

The Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade is more than just a fire station — it’s a group of locals who care deeply about keeping their community safe.
